Works to reduce the over-population of unwanted cats by stabilizing barn cat colonies and reducing the number of free-roaming cats through Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR). Organizes humane trapping of unowned and loosely owned cats from farms, outbuildings, and the streets; provides spay/neuter services, vaccinations, and needed medical care; and returns them to their original environment or partners with other agencies that place adoptable animals in appropriate homes. Also provides periodic spay/neuter clinics.

Offers assistance in cat rescue, practices Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) service for ferals, provides spay/neuter services for stray cats and kittens and fosters strays until adopted into homes. Cats and kittens are placed in numerous foster homes in the area. They are not able to assist with re-homing.

Provides temporary homes, food, medical, and behavioral care for stray or surrendered animals. Provides adoption services, pet food pantry, low-cost spay/neuter clinics, volunteer, and educational opportunities. Assists low-income owners with vet bills via a no-interest loan program. Once the pet is done weaning her babies and her milk has dried up, she will be spayed and receive any other medical care she needs, before being returned to her owner. All offspring will be kept by the Humane Society to be placed up for adoption.

Provides low-cost spay and neuter services for dogs and cats (Spay/Neuter Assistance Program or SNAP). Also offers Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) services, working with individuals or groups of community members who care for community cat colonies. Second Chance will provide traps for individual/group to trap and transport cats to the shelter where they will be spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and ear-tipped before being picked up and released back to their home territory.

The shelter attempts to reunite lost pets with owners. The Foster Care Program provides food and supplies for volunteers willing to provide temporary foster care for pregnant cats and dogs, animals recovering from minor surgery, and animals in extreme stress in the shelter environment. Also provides monthly Wellness Clinics at their Brattleboro shelter and in Wilmington, open only to pet owners receiving Pet Care Assistance. Provides low-cost spay and neuter services for cats whose owners are unable to afford a full-service veterinarian. Also offers a grant to assist with pet veterinarian costs. All procedures are same-day drop-off and pick-up. VT-CAN has limited capacity for smaller, younger dogs under 40 pounds and recommends contacting your local humane society or the Vermont Spay Neuter Incentive Program (VSNIP) for dogs.

Provides free spay services for pets who are pregnant or who have given birth. Includes initial vaccines, de-wormer, flea treatment, and microchip. Adult pet returns to owner, but owner may not keep or give away any of the litter. All offspring must be brought to the Humane Society to be placed up for adoption.

Provides a volunteer-run shelter for abandoned or unwanted pets and provides secure placement of the animals in permanent adoptive homes. Offers monthly Spay ASAP low-cost spay/neuter clinic for cats and spaying services for dogs by appointment to income-eligible pet owners. A 14-day trial period is granted for each adoption. All pets are spayedneutered, up to date on shots, wormed, and heartworm- tested. All dogs and cats are microchipped with Petlink, Inc. chips.

Provides spaying service for the mother cat, dog, or rabbit of an unwanted litter, who is returned to the owner. The offspring are signed over to the Humane Society to be put up for adoption when ready. Litter must be fully weaned and no longer nursing. Mothers must be in good health and no longer producing milk.

Provides a free "Spay the Mom Program" to mom dogs and cats. After weaning their litters, all offspring are surrendered to the Humane Society. Appointments are made at local veterinarians for spays and vaccinations (rabies and distemper) for the mother. The offspring are spayed/neutered, microchipped, given age-appropriate vaccinations etc. and adopted to new families.
