VOLUNTEERS IN ACTION | MOUNT ASCUTNEY HOSPITAL AND HEALTH CENTER

Recruits volunteers and matches interests and abilities with community members in need. Administers a volunteer program and coordinates local volunteers with senior community members who would like friendly visiting sessions, telephone reassurance calls, and minor home repairs. Provides volunteer drivers to assist with transportation to needed services such as medical, dental, grocery shopping, senior meal sites, court dates, housing appointments, etc. This service is not a formal transportation service and provision of rides is dependent upon volunteer driver availability. One week advance notice appreciated for a ride request.

Participants are educated first in a classroom setting and then paired with an experienced travel advisor to learn the basic components of the system, including routes, fares, schedules, and policies. Helps build confidence in riding the bus and traveling independently. Accepts volunteers to serve as travel advisors. The training is customized to meet the rider's needs and includes the dos and don'ts of riding, as well as anticipating possible travel scenarios.

SENIOR RIDES AND MEDICAL TRANSPORTATION | C.I.D.E.R.

Provides wheelchair-accessible, door-to-door transportation to medical appointments and therapy, grocery shopping, adult day programs, senior meals, and personal and social activities. Door-through-door service includes assisting passenger within the origin or destination of their trip. Individuals not requiring wheelchair accessibility are usually transported in private autos operated by C.I.D.E.R. volunteer drivers. Most trips are "on demand" except for regularly scheduled shopping or excursion trips. May be able to accommodate early morning, evening and weekend requests as well.
