CIRCLES OF SUPPORT AND ACCOUNTABILITY | WILLISTON COMMUNITY JUSTICE CENTER

Supports the successful re-entry into the community of people released from incarceration through Circles of Support and Accountability (COSAs). COSAs are made up of citizen volunteers who work with participants to help them learn to manage the challenges of everyday life, be accountable for their actions and become responsible community members. Volunteer coordinators may help establish links to employment, housing, transportation, and benefit programs. COSA volunteers provide emotional and practical support for the participant to help him or her become a productive, self-supporting citizen, manage the everyday challenges, and be accountable for safe and responsible living.

Provides restorative interventions for youth and youthful offenders involved with the juvenile justice system, at risk of becoming involved with the juvenile justice system, and/or truant. Aims to decrease risk factors and strengthen protective factors in order to reduce or eliminate further involvement in the system. Offers community restorative practices.

RESTORATIVE JUSTICE PANELS | MONTPELIER COMMUNITY JUSTICE CENTER

Offers restorative justice programs that require that the person who committed the offense meet with a group of trained citizen volunteers to be accountable to their community. Affected parties and others impacted by the incident are welcomed into the process. Offenders are expected to engage in dialogue with the Panels or conference attendees and the affected parties in order to deepen their understanding of the harm they caused to the individuals and their community. They also must collaboratively develop and complete activities to make amends, reduce the likelihood to re-offend, and connect positively with their community.

Offers low-level offenders an alternative to the formal court process and gives them a second chance to make amends. Provides educational strategies and practices, including special instructional methods and materials, learning activities and diagnostic and assessment procedures which encourage children and adolescents to maintain an acceptable grade point average, avoid excessive absenteeism or disruptive behaviors which put them at risk for suspension or expulsion and remain in school through completion their elementary and secondary education.
