Provides information on and assistance with filing for property tax relief related to one's primary residence. Applications are available via website. Deadline: May 1st of each year; Provides a minimum $10,000 dollar exemption, up to $40,000 off of assessed value.

TAX FILING ASSISTANCE PROGRAM | CAPSTONE COMMUNITY ACTION

Provides tax information and assistance with tax filing preparation and e-filing of federal and state income tax returns, as well as assistance with filing for renters' rebates and homestead declarations at three locations. Also provides services for those filing basic self-employment returns (sole proprietors who do not carry inventory or depreciation). Provides tax information year-round. Appointments can be made at Capstone locations in Barre, Morrisville, Randolph, and Waitsfield. Provides short in-person appointments to drop off and check over paperwork, which taxpayers will leave with VITA volunteer. Volunteer will call for a follow-up appointment to sign and collect forms.

VERMONT HEALTH CARE ADVOCACY SERVICES | VERMONT LEGAL AID

Operates a helpline providing advocacy for problems involving health care and health insurance. Case types include access to health care, billing, eligibility, and insurance coverage issues. The Office of the Health Care Advocate has a tax attorney on staff to assist individuals with tax filing questions and issues, but does NOT provide assistance with actual filing of returns. This program also recommends needed health care policy changes to the Legislature and administrative agencies.

WHERE'S MY REFUND | INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE

Provides an online refund-tracking tool allowing taxpayers who have filed a federal tax return to check the status of their refund. Also provides a toll-free Refund Line. Offers a free smartphone app that allows checking for refund status, paying tax bills, and finding tax preparation assistance. Download Smartphone Application via the website. Toll-Free Refund Line should only be used if: It has been 21 days or more since an electronic filing; More than 6 weeks since a paper return has been mailed; or The "My Refund" tool says to contact IRS.
