VERMONT AUTOMATED NOTIFICATION SERVICE | VERMONT DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS

Provides current information about offenders to crime victims and the general public, including offender status information and whether the offender is being held in a facility or being supervised in the community. Once registered, interested individuals will be notified immediately of any changes to an offender's custody status.

CRIME VICTIM SERVICES | DISABILITY RIGHTS VERMONT

Provides confidential advocacy and, when appropriate, legal representation for people with disabilities who are victims of crime. Investigates reports of abuse, neglect, financial exploitation, and domestic violence. Assists with police and court processes, Relief From Abuse Orders, and securing disability-related accommodations such as interpreters. Offers counseling and referrals to local agencies for further support. Provides free publication, "A Guide for Crime Victims with Disabilities." Available for download from the website.

VICTIM COMPENSATION PROGRAM | VERMONT CENTER FOR CRIME VICTIM SERVICES

Provides financial assistance of up to $10,000 to eligible crime victims who have experienced a financial loss as the direct result of a crime, as long as the loss is not reimbursable through other sources, such as insurance. When appropriate, money is available to pay for the following expenses: medical and dental care, counseling for victims and family members, funeral expenses, lost wages due to time missed from work, other expenses such as prescriptions, eyeglasses, and limited transportation costs. If death occurs as a result of the crime, legal dependents may receive temporary living expenses. All services are ONLY available via telephone. Individuals may request in person meetings in advance with CCVS staff. Eligibility for victims of sexual assault is different and specific to that crime. Victims of sexual assault are encouraged to contact CCVS. Applications are available at local police departments, at each State Attorney's office and on the VCCVS website.

Provides information, resources, and support to individuals who have experienced crime and harm , even if the individual responsible is never identified or apprehended. Types of assistance include emotional support, safety planning, referrals to other organizations, systems advocacy, and limited financial assistance.

LEGAL SERVICES | HAVE JUSTICE WILL TRAVEL

Provides legal and supportive services including legal consultations and representation in court. Representation is provided for relief-from-abuse hearings, divorce, parentage issues, child support and custody issues, visitation issues, and Guardian ad Litem services in Family Court. Transportation is provided to court hearings, social service appointments, and supervised visits for children. Services also include a life skills and mentoring support group, Women in Transition, to help women build new lives for themselves and their children. Supports the passage and enforcement of laws and other social measures that protect and promote the rights and interests of women. Can meet a victim of abuse in the home or outside the home, in a safe place, to discuss safety planning, family and individual needs, and the legal process.

SPECIAL INVESTIGATIONS UNIT | VERMONT CHILDREN'S ALLIANCE

Provides investigation of all sexually based crimes and assures that victims are supported through the process. Facilitates the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART), a team of professionals from diverse fields who respond to sex crimes. SART members include investigators from Vermont Department for Children and Families, law enforcement officers, victim advocates, prosecutors and medical and mental health professionals. The team also provides community outreach to educate and increase awareness of impact of these crimes on victims.

Provides services and programs for victims of crime, which includes informing victims about their rights, offender status, safety planning, and wrap-around services. Offers assistance to victims participating in the offender release process or parole board hearings, reviews requests for victims concerning offender contact, and referrals to community support resources such as support groups and counseling. Programs include the Victim-Offender Dialogue Program, providing the opportunity for victims who are interested, to meet with the offender and the Apology/Accountability Letter Bank, where all apology letters by offenders to victims are held until the victim requests them.

WISE Advocates can meet in person at the WISE Program Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire, on the Dartmouth College campus, and at other locations within the Upper Valley such as health care facilities, courts, police stations, schools, and community organizations.

VERMONT'S VICTIM ASSISTANCE AND ADVOCATES PROGRAM | OFFICE OF THE VERMONT ATTORNEY GENERAL

Maintains contact information about crime victim advocates' offices located throughout Vermont's 14 counties. Provides a variety of supportive services for victims of crimes and their families which may include general emotional support, information about police investigative procedures, and information on the status of court cases and proceedings. Victim Advocates guide victims through the criminal justice process and serve as a liaison with the State's Attorneys and other criminal justice agencies. Advocates notify victims of hearings, prepare victims to testify, and assist victims with applications for Victims Compensation. They also assist with completing Victim Impact Statements, requesting restitution, and requesting notification of their offender's release. The US Attorney's Office (not the Vermont Attorney General's Office) prosecutes federal crimes and assists victims of federal crimes in Vermont through its Victim Witness Program.
