TAX SCAM AND FRAUD PREVENTION AND REPORTING | INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE

Provides alerts about tax scams, including an annual "Dirty Dozen" list of common scams. Telephone service is primarily recorded information. Avoid tax fraud: The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information. This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. Tax Fraud Hotline offers a recorded message with options to report fraud, including ordering forms by mail.

SOCIAL SECURITY FRAUD PREVENTION AND REPORTING | SOCIAL SECURITY ADMINISTRATION

Provides a way to report fraud and scams involving Social Security. Also provides information about how to protect against scams and identity theft. Examples of Social Security fraud include: Making false statements on claims; Concealing facts or events that affect eligibility for benefits; Misusing benefits (by a representative payee); Failing to notify the agency of the death of a beneficiary and continuing to receive the deceased person’s benefits; Buying or selling Social Security cards; Filing claims under another person’s Social Security number (SSN); Scamming people by impersonating our employees; Bribing SSA employees; Misusing grant or contract funds.

CONSUMER ASSISTANCE PROGRAM | OFFICE OF THE VERMONT ATTORNEY GENERAL

Provides a consumer complaint line for reporting incidents of consumer fraud or deception and investigates and prosecutes violations of Vermont's consumer laws. Issues scam alerts to inform the public of fraudulent telephone and Internet activities and mediates disputes between consumers and businesses. Automotive Consumer Assistance Program (AUTOCAP) handles complaints about vehicles purchased from a Vermont Auto Dealers Association (VADA) member. This program also handles complaints consumers may have with their propane company. Provides information and advise about telemarketing, charitable solicitation and debt collection calls.
