Offers assistance helping individuals prepare basic tax forms, including the 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ, and other standard schedules. Also provides online information about such tax issues as IRS tax scams and tax identity theft.
Offers free basic income tax return preparation by trained volunteers at community locations. Volunteers can also help with special credits, such as Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly. Many VITA sites offer free electronic filing. In addition to VITA, the Tax Counseling for the Elderly program offers free tax help for all taxpayers, particularly those who are 60 years of age and older, specializing in questions about pensions and retirement-related issues. The IRS VITA/TCA Locator Tool is not always active in early January. Tax filing assistance for those who do not meet eligibility requirements is available on the MyFreeTaxes website. Does not apply to business income or expense, dividend income or asset transactions. Joint filers must both be present to sign the return.

Provides information and assistance with Vermont taxes. Staff is available to answer questions, help fill out returns, and to conduct tax education. The program also enables taxpayers to check on the status of their tax return.

Provides appointment scheduling for virtual assistance for 70 VITA sites, including some along the Vermont-New Hampshire border. Sites provide tax-filing assistance for state and federal income tax forms, renter rebates, earned income credit, and property tax paperwork through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program. Scheduling assistance is provided by New Hampshire 2-1-1; actual tax preparation assistance would be provided by a VITA site.
Provides a suite of free tax services for members of the military including easy-to-use tax preparation and e-filing software, personalized support from a tax consultant, and current information about tax filing specifically for the military. Military OneSource resources, including MILTAX, are available for up to 365 days after a service member has separated from duty. For the 2024 filing season, MILTAX software will be available starting Wednesday, January 15, 2025. The last official day to file taxes as a service member is Tuesday, Apirl 15, 2025. Filing extensions for service members can made through mid-October 2025.
