Provides involuntary, intensive psychiatric care for individuals unable to receive treatment and care in other settings. Also provides court-ordered secure observation of individuals for evaluation and determination of competency.

The Department of Mental Health (DMH) is the state agency responsible for administering mental health programs for adults, children, and families. DMH assigns one Designated Agency in each geographic region of the state to be responsible for providing that area's direct services. DMH is responsible for supervising the operations of hospitals that provide inpatient care for individuals with mental illness, and manages the Vermont Psychiatric Care Hospital.
