Administers a network of state service programs that engage volunteers, both full and part-time, to serve in nonprofit organizations, public agencies, and faith-based organizations where they provide intensive services to meet needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment. Members' services may include opportunities to tutor and mentor youth, build affordable housing, teach computer skills, clean parks and streams, run after-school programs, and help communities respond to disaster. AmeriCorps' programs include AmeriCorps VISTA, the AmeriCorps NCCC Program (National Civilian Community Corps), FEMACorps, and Senior Corps. Senior Corps volunteer opportunities include RSVP (Retired Seniors Volunteer Program) that matches skills and experiences with needs of the community, the Foster Grandparents Program, a tutoring and mentoring program, and the Senior Companion Program, assisting and caring for the elderly. Full-time AmeriCorps members also receive a modest living allowance, health care benefits, and child care.
